With this year’s growing season a little milder and a little wetter than 2007, local Christmas tree farmers say families can expect to find a healthy, robust crop to choose from this winter.
“It was a really good spring,” said Joe Dennis, with Holiday Tree Farm in Vincent. “Everything seems to be doing really well.”
A dry spell in late summer and throughout much of the fall hasn’t hurt the trees at Caywood Christmas Tree Farm either, said owner Helen Morrison.
“The dry weather really didn’t hit until August and really September and October,” she said.

MIE to comply with EPA order

Lining up for food

One look at Front and Second streets around the county fairgrounds at midday Tuesday tells me all I need to know about the state of our economy. The Celebration Center on Front Street was conducting a drive-through, free food giveaway at the fairgrounds. All you had to be was a resident of Ohio. Organizers said they gave away food (potatoes, apples, cereal, etc.) to 1,000 people. That those people probably were in line for an hour or so shows to me that lots of our neighbors are in need. Leslie and I were in line for about 20 minutes, helping a relative new to the area find her way to the fairgrounds. Once we got to Second Street, after sitting in line 20 minutes to cover half a block of Montgomery Street we pulled out and went home. Our relative stayed in line, but the food ran out before she could get to the fairgrounds. Just imagine, more than a thousand people probably burned a gallon or two of gas so they could get some food for free! I'm glad they got some help.

Live from New York it's... John McCain?

So now that John McCain's met with President-elect Obama and promised to promote bipartisanship and work with his former opponent on certain issues, what's next? I know he's still in the Senate, but he's got to have some more free time now that the two-year 2008 presidential campaign is over. My suggestion? Become a regular member of the “Saturday Night Live” cast. The election helped propel “SNL” back into relevance not only with good sketches skewering the race and the candidates, but also with guest spots by candidates. I haven't done an official count, but McCain seemed to be the most frequent visitor and he was darn funny when he did it.

Political endorsements

This week, The Marietta Times will begin publishing its endorsements of candidates. You may have noticed we've already run editorials against the casino issue in Ohio and in support of the local mental health levy for children. In the days leading up to the Nov. 4 election we will run endorsements for individual candidates at the local, state and national levels. Our editorial board voices our opinions every day on issues important to this community. The endorsements are simply an extension of that. Our opinions are strictly that, opinions, but we hope they also help to inform and motivate our readers by provoking thought and sparking discussion. In many cases we've had the opportunity to sit down with candidates one-on-one. We've sorted through the information and we've discussed the candidates' strengths and weaknesses. We hope you'll consider the information provided in the endorsements prior to making your own decisions on Election Day.

Times Scoop: Unreported voting bloc of Zombie Americans keys Obama victory -- 11:32 p.m.

You've heard of the Joe the Plumber voter and the Joe the Six Pack voter, but what about Wess the Zombie? Wess Apshaga-Meaux, 28, of Marietta, walks out to the patio at the Brewery for a cigarette. His shuffle is not so uncommon for a young man at a bar, but take a closer look the buttons on his hooded sweatshirt and you may be in for a surprise. Apshaga-Meaux is a Zombie for Obama. At least he is according to a button he wears on his jacket. Apshaga-Meaux figures he's only one of two Zombies for Obama supporters in the region. "Zombies are the most underreported and underestimated minority in the election," he jokes. Aphshaga-Meaux also sports a "Gamers for Obama" button, while his wife, Kelly, dons a "Unicorns for Obama" button. Wess said he found them on a Web site and ordered them about five weeks ago. "The 'Gamers for Obama' was the first one that attracted me to the site because I play (Dungeons & Dragons).

One moment in time

The poll question on this Web site today asks where you were when history was being made.In another time, I would probably have answered that I was celebrating (or crying) with my fellow party members and family and friends at the headquarters or an event somewhere watching the results roll in and witnessing democracy in action.That was before I had a 3-year-old and a job that requires me to get up at the crack of dawn.But this historic election has not passed me by unnoticed. Good grief, how could it?Even my daughter recognized the candidates when they came on TV. "We like him," she would say, or "We don't like that guy...he's mean."She could even identify whose sign belonged to whom.Of course, I tried to explain to her as best I could what was going on, who the people were, what they believed in and why some people were mad at other people.I come from a family with strong political beliefs.

Tuesday's election is historic

Tomorrow is Election Day. Yes, I know it is historical, yes I know that we will have either have a black man as president, or a woman as vice president. Neither should be an issue. Unfortunately they both have been. For a huge number of Americans it is historical for another reason. There is neither a Bush nor Clinton on the ticket. A voter must look back to 1976 and the election between Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford to find an election that didn’t have a Bush or Clinton running either on the top or bottom of the ticket. Jimmy Carter won that election of course, only to be beaten four years later by the Reagan- Bush ticket. Ronald Reagan came to Marietta the weekend before the election in a push to get the Ohio vote. A college student at Ohio University at the time, I helped cover the event for The Marietta Times. A few days later I would vote in my first presidential election.
