Keeping our kids safe
December 18, 2012 - Jim Bartholow
The Connecticut school tragedy has me wondering when all this carnage will stop. Children and teachers were gunned down in their classrooms. This can't be happening. Better yet, we have to do anything possible to make sure it doesn't happen again. We owe it to our children and grandchildren. Gun control remains a simple solution, if it would work. Remember Prohibition? That didn't work. Remember our War on Drugs? That didn't work either. Gun ownership is part of America. It's in our Constitution. To think Americans are just going to give up one of their basic rights, even in the face of repeated classroom carnage or movie theater mayhem, is wishful thinking among some people.
I think we need to beef up security. Take it to a whole new level. Armed guards. Very limited access to buildings. Beyond a buzzer system at existing doors. Redesigning schools to create a barrier between the outside world and areas where learning takes place. Some may say this would turn our schools into prisons. I don't think the security has to be so heavy handed as far as what students see. Ohio is spending millions on building new schools. Oho should divert that money NOW to improving security at our schools. Start with the primary grades and work our way up.
We need to protect our children so they can grow up to be healthy, educated adults. Improved security is the best way to keep out people intent on senseless killing. The pain felt in Newtown should propel Ohioans, all Americans really, into action to prevent such horrible acts.
