Progress 2008

Rivers play a vital role

March 28, 2008

Like a giant magnet, the swirling, muddy and capricious confluence of the Ohio and Muskingum rivers has drawn commercial enterprises, fishermen, boaters, artists and philosophers for more than 200 years.

This meeting of waters has been a pivotal point in Marietta from the beginning.

“They claim that the human spirit comes from the water and that we are naturally attracted to water,” said Brooks Harper, former mayor of Marietta. “The river opened up a large section of land to development, and since the beginning, there has been movement up and down (the) river in both directions.”

Like a suckling child and its mother, the river and her people are bonded.

“The first settlement was a fort on the Harmar side (of the Muskingum River),” said Harper, a Harmar businessman and developer. “The water level has raised a good bit since, and a lot of the fort is out there in the river right now.
