Marietta High baseball armed

March 26, 2009

Marietta High is strong on the hill, and if the Tigers hit they’re going to be a tough prep baseball team to beat this spring. “We won with pitching last year, and we have our top two pitchers back,” said MHS co-head coach Jim Thrash. “We’re pretty deep in pitching. “Offensively, though, well, we didn’t score a lot of runs last year. We’re going to have to do better in that department this year.” As a team, Marietta batted just .262 in 2008, scoring 118 runs in 25 games. Evan Brockmeier was the Tigers’ leading hitter with a .318 batting average. Christian Hudspeth was next with a .316 average, and Cole Biehl followed, .308. Michael Bauman hit .500, but only had 14 at-bats, because he was injured a good portion of the season. Both Hudspeth (4 doubles, 16 runs scored) — a first baseman — and Biehl (3 doubles, 13 stolen bases) — a second baseman — have graduated. Also getting his diploma was part-time starter Mark Somerville, a right fielder.
