Thomas Minton, 52, of 16488 State Route 339, Waterford, was not at his residence when his shotgun discharged and struck his left hand Sunday afternoon.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office initially reported the incident happened at Minton's residence.
Minton said Wednesday that he was attempting to unload his hunting dogs from the rear of his truck at a piece of land just outside Waterford when the topper on the vehicle came down on his gun, causing it to fire.
Minton said he lost two fingers on his left hand in the incident, but that he is home recovering.
