Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said in a transcript from an Oct. 1 flu media briefing that "about 100 pregnant women in the United States have required intensive care unit hospitalization for H1N1 flu. Sadly, 28 pregnant women in the U.S. have died so far from the H1N1 influenza." Some national news media have translated that statement to mean approximately one in three pregnant women hospitalized with H1N1 flu have died.
A comment referencing these statistics appeared in Wednesday's edition of The Marietta Times.
