The music department of Ohio Valley University in Vienna, W.Va., is accepting applications for vocal and instrumental music scholarships. The application deadline for music scholarship auditions is March 6.
Instrumental students may audition to perform in the OVU Community Instrumental Ensemble or the Jazz Ensemble. The A Cappella Singers and Express, OVU's contemporary Christian ensemble, also accept vocal students by audition. Music scholarships for these four groups will be awarded based on auditions held Saturday, March 20.
Choral scholarship applicants must prepare one art song, aria or folk song to be accompanied by a piano. This should be the type of piece one would perform at a solo and ensemble competition. Applicants should also be prepared for an aural skills test that includes sight-reading and pitch memory exercises.
Instrumental scholarship applicants must prepare a sonata or concerto with two contrasting movements (fast-slow) or two contrasting etudes. Students may also substitute one movement with a jazz tune to show technical proficiency and/or improvisational skills. A sight-reading skills test will also be required.
OVU Express scholarship applicants should prepare one accompanied song, preferably from the contemporary Christian genre, and one unaccompanied hymn at a slow tempo. Students must also be prepared for an aural skills test that includes sight-reading and pitch memory exercises.
A letter of recommendation from a high school choir, band or orchestra director or private teacher is required for all scholarship auditions and must be submitted by the application deadline.
Student-musicians interested in applying for a music scholarship must complete an online application by March 6. If applicants request an accompanist, music should be mailed to OVU Music Scholarship Auditions, c/o Laura Hamm, Ohio Valley University, 1 Campus View Drive, Vienna, W.Va. 26105-8000.
