Today - Patriots and Pioneers reception and preview of exhibits, "General James Mitchell Varnum" and "Fort Harmar 225th" at Campus Martius Museum; 5:30 to 8 p.m.; free tours and refreshments; open to public; sponsored by Marietta Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution.

Friday and Saturday - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Oliver Tucker Museum tours, Ohio 60 at Park Street, Beverly.

Friday - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., West African Art Museum, Ely Chapman Education Foundation, 403 Scammel St., Marietta.

Friday and Saturday - 1 to 4 p.m., Fearing House tours, 131 Gilman St., Marietta.

Friday, April 2 and 9 - Marietta Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, Chapter Library, 507 Eighth St., Marietta; open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; free and open to researching your patriot ancestor.

Monday - 7 p.m., Washington State Community College, "The First Rhode Island Regiment, America's First Black Regiment," Joe Becton of the 1st RI Regiment, will present camp life, songs and stories, and a discussion of the involvement of Generals Varnum and Washington at Valley Forge as they create an all Black Regiment, with slaves and freemen; open to the public at no charge; sponsored by Diversity and Social Justice Committee at Washington State Community College and Marietta SAR.

Wednesday - 8 to 9 a.m., Warren High School, "The First Rhode Island Regiment, America's First Black Regiment," limited to 800 students and school district guests.

Wednesday - Commemoration to celebrate the founding of Marietta and the 225th anniversary of Fort Harmar, 10:30 a.m., Harmar School, three 15-minute sessions, 20 minutes apart, third to fifth grades (program 225th Fort Harmar through First Settlers); noon to 12:30 p.m., East Muskingum Park, Landing of the Pioneers Monument; 1 to 2 p.m., Campus Martius Museum; sponsored by Marietta Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, and Campus Martius Museum; programs in period costume.

Wednesday - Annual Pioneers Day Bell Ringing at Fearing House; all Harmar School students and open to public; Henry Fearing House tours, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Wednesday - Washington County Historical Society, 222nd Pioneer Day Dinner, American Legion Post 64, Marietta; guest speaker, Bill Reynolds, Fort Harmar 225th Anniversary (display, Sheldon S. Cohen, author of "Commodore Abraham Whipple of the Continental Navy, Privateer, Patriot, Pioneer"); 5:30, social hour; 6:30, dinner; $25; reservations, 373-1788.

Thursday, April 8 - 12:40 p.m., Marietta Middle School, eighth grade; author Sheldon S. Cohen, 20 to 25 minute discussion on Commodore Abraham Whipple.

Thursday, April 8 - 7 p.m., Marietta College McDonough Auditorium, Commodore Abraham Whipple, presentation by author Sheldon S. Cohen, with illustrations presented by Linda Showalter, Marietta College Special Collections.

Friday, April 9 - 1 to 5 p.m., Sugden Book Store, Whipple book signing with author Sheldon Cohen; 2:30, book discussion, 282 Front St.

Friday, April 9 - 6 to 9 p.m., Riverside Artist Gallery, Campus Martius/Ohio River Museum, Friends of the Museums Benefit, 175 Front St., Marietta.

Saturday, April 10 - 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Patriots and Pioneers Conference at Washington State Community College; history and genealogy classes and displays; $15 (includes Subway lunch); class schedule and details to register, www.mariettasar.org; registration information also in all Washington County libraries.

Saturday and Sunday, April 10 and 11 - Annual Ohio Longrifle Show, Lafayette Hotel, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday; small admission; www.aolrc.org.

Sunday, April 11 - First Congregational Church, bell ringing of the carillon performed with various patriotic tunes, noon to 12:30 p.m.

Sunday, April 11 - 1 to 4 p.m., Fearing House tours, 131 Gilman St., Marietta.

Sunday, April 11 - 1 to 4 p.m., Children's Toy and Doll Museum tours, 206 Gilman St., Marietta.

Sunday, April 11 - 1 to 3 p.m., People's Mortuary Museum, 408 Front St.(park in back).

Sunday, April 11 - Farmer Castle Museum and Belpre Historical Society celebrates Belpre's 221st birthday with an open house, 2 to 5 p.m.

Tuesday, April 13 - Belpre Historical Society, annual Founders Day Dinner, 6 p.m., Rockland United Methodist Church; speaker, Col. James Kerns, 17th Virginia Cavalry Company F, CSA historian; for reservations and cost, 423-7382.
