Middle schools to celebrate 50 yrs. of wrestling

Wood County event on Feb. 12, 2011 to honor past mat champions, coaches

December 30, 2010
By Dave Poe, Special to The Times

PARKERSBURG - No sport in Parkersburg is more steeped in tradition than wrestling.

So it's only natural that when the 50th Wood County Middle School Championships are conducted at Memorial Fieldhouse on Feb. 12, 2011, organizers of the day-long tournament are going all-out to celebrate the history of wrestling in Wood County.

Brent Sams, the assistant tournament director and head scorekeeper for the event, is working in conjunction with Wood County Middle School Athletic Coordinator Allan Johnson to contact all the past county champions and head coaches and invite them to the event.

Two retired head coaches who are members of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame - Joe Handlan Jr. of Parkersburg High School and Bob Pickens of Williamstown High School - will serve as parade marshals for the parade of champions that will take place before the finals are conducted.

Pickens, by the way, was a member of the original team at Jackson Junior High.

Invitations also are going out to three-time county champions -there have been 20 -and other wrestlers with major accomplishments to present awards for the various weight classes.

Junior high wrestling was started in 1961, when former Parkersburg High School state champion Daniel 'Buddy' James formed a team at Jackson Junior High School in Vienna. It wrestled a pair of scrimmages that year, against VanDevender and Hamilton junior highs.

The following year, in 1962, wrestling was recognized as an official sport in Wood County and the first county tournament was conducted with six schools participating. In 49 years, 685 individual champions have been crowned.

Edison has enjoyed the most success, winning 16 team championships and finishing as the runner-up on 11 times. Blennerhassett is second with 13 titles and 10 second place finishes. Others include Jackson seven titles and 10 runner-up performances; Franklin 7 and 4; VanDevender 3 and 2; Washington 1 and 4; Ripley 1 and 1; Point Pleasant 1 and 0; Hamilton 0 and 3; Williamstown 0 and 3; Parkersburg South freshmen 0 and 1; and Belpre and Parkersburg Catholic 0 and 0.

Coach James, who went on to become the winningest head football coach in the history of Parkersburg High School, will be on hand to present team awards along with other record-setting coaches such as Bob Miller, Dan Clevenger, Bob Moore and Dike Goff.

Organizers are in the process of putting together a special program that will be available for purchase at the tournament. It will include a history of the junior high/middle school program, lists of yearly winners, champions by school, team champions, outstanding wrestler winners and three-time champions. The program also will honor outstanding contributors to the middle school program and a Who's Who of Wrestling from Wood County. All those involved will receive anniversary ribbons and those presenting awards will receive commemorative coins..

Among those scheduled to present awards are Dalton George and Mackenzie Peters of Williamstown; Felix Osuna-Cotto, Dustin Wright and Jeremy Cochran of Blennerhassett; Nathan Pickens and Jason Barton of Edison; Kevin Cochran, Rich Underwood, Gig Dornick and Steve Bosley of Franklin; Cody Richards, who won titles for both Edison and Blennerhassett; Dave McNemar of Jackson; Dave Nedeff of Hamilton; and John Curry of Washington.

Organizers still are seeking commitments from other outstanding wrestlers.

Sams said he began working on the 50th tournament last year with Fred Bartimoccia, Johnson's predecessor as the Wood County middle school athletic coordinator.
