PARKERSBURG - Logan Flanagan and Case Edgar combined to drive in five runs and Wes Mitchem scattered eight hits in a complete-game effort here Wednesday evening at Bennett Stump Field to help lead Parkersburg Post 15 to an 8-2 victory against St. Marys Post 79 in the opening game of a twinbill. Post 79 also dropped the nightcap, 13-2.
Mitchem needed less than 90 pitches to go the distance. He allowed two earned runs while walking one and fanning a pair.
St. Marys (2-8) losing pitcher Kyle Wiegel was chased before giving way to Colby Vanoy with one out in the second. Already leading 3-0 after one, the hosts scored five times in the second before Vanoy entered and finished the game by allowing just two hits in 4? innings of work.
Post 15, which returns to action with a 1 p.m. Sunday doubleheader at Clarksburg Post 13, led 3-0 after the first four batters came to the plate.
Leadoff hitter Josh Wine doubled to right-center and the catcher Flanagan followed with a triple to deep right and proceeded to score on a throwing error. Alex Mace later followed with a one-out triple to left and scampered home on another errant throw.
Jacob Wilcox's infield single deep in the hole at shortstop got Post 15's big second inning going. Following a Clay Walters fly out, the hosts had seven consecutive batters reach base. Wine walked and scored along with Wilcox for a 5-0 edge on Flanagan's two-run single. Randy Tallhamer then crushed a shot deep off the fence in center for an RBI double. After a Mace single and a free pass to Brett Burns, Edgar drove in two with a base knock up the middle.
Post 79 had few scoring opportunities the rest of the game. Reno Jackson was left stranded in the third after reaching on a two-out double.
Bobby Casto, who had two hits in three at-bats including a two-run double in the second that plated Wiegel and D.J. Burgess, was left stranded at first in the fourth. In the sixth, Jackson singled and stole second and despite a one-out single by Wiegel, Mitchem got out of the first and third jam.
Needing five runs to stay alive in the top of the seventh, Aaron Tice of St. Marys drew a one-out free pass and Mitch Davis delivered a single, but they were left on base after Mitchem retired Tony Brunicardi on a soft liner and Jackson on a fly out.
Parkersburg (6-6) also won the nightcap, 13-2, in five innings. St. Marys is back in action at 9 p.m. today in Elkins against Morgantown Post 29.
