Fall fashion: Marietta style

September 3, 2011
By Ashley Rittenhouse (arittenhouse@mariettatimes.com) , The Marietta Times

The first day of fall is just a few weeks away, which means it will soon be time to pack up the shorts, tank tops and flip flops and fill the closet with clothing better suited for the cooler temperatures that are sure to set in.

Of course, with the new season comes new trends.

"One of the hot trends right now is a poncho, stole, capelet sweater, top/jacket," said Teri Ann Pfeffer, owner of Teri Ann's on Front Street in Marietta. "It transcends from an outerwear capelet to a box cut sweater with dolman sleeve and boxy cut top."

Shelly Medley models a leather jacket with fur trim, bootcut jeans and purse that is meant to be worn across the body.

A dolman sleeve is one that is wide at the armhole and narrow at the wrist.

"It gives us a lot of flexibility," said Pfeffer. "If that top is hip length, it goes with a flare leg and if it's tunic length, it goes with a legging."

As far as colors for fall, according to fashionising.com, burnt colors will be in for both men and women. This includes colors that are between red and yellow.

Oriental-inspired and 1970s-inspired pieces will also be popular this fall, according to the website.

The 1970s-inspired pieces include high waisted, wide leg pants with a belt, blouses made with fabrics like silk and satin that have a bow and billowing sleeves and roll neck sweaters tucked into pants or skirts. Wearing high-sheen fabrics with a 1970s disco inspired edge, such as lurex or silk, will also achieve the look, as well as adding a ruffled neckline under a blazer or tuxedo jacket.

To get the oriental-inspired look, wear exotic silks, vintage kimonos and oriental-inspired floral prints.

"The other thing that's strong is leather, fur and faux fur," Pfeffer noted. "A leather bomber jacket - that's a hot trend."

According to fashionising.com, fur and leather go hand in hand, so any pieces that mix the two together work well.

Plaid and animal prints will also be popular this fall, according to Summer Mason, manager of the Peebles store in Marietta.

"(There are) animal prints in everything - blues, reds, oranges and browns," she said.

Pleats, plunging necklines and bell bottoms will also be popular this fall, according to fashionising.com.

As for shoes and accessories, the website indicates choker necklaces and cuff bracelets are must-haves for fall. Pfeffer said deep and tall satchels will also be popular, as well as scarves. She said some popular fall colors are purple and gray.

Tucking skinny jeans into tall boots will also be a popular trend, according to Deanna Flesher, assistant store manager at Peebles.

"It looks like the tall knee boots are coming back in this year," she said.

There are even certain colors that will be popular for makeup this fall, according to Jane Osborne, manager of the Estee Lauder counter at Peebles in Marietta.

"Metallics, grays and burgundys are popular with cosmetics," she said.
