Drug abuse continues to plague our region

February 27, 2012
The Marietta Times

When will people wise up and realize abusing drugs is bad for you?

We're not only talking about those who abuse prescription drugs, which appears to be just as much of a problem - if not bigger - than trafficking in illegal drugs such as marijuana and cocaine.

Word came Friday of three more arrests for illegal trafficking in marijuana. Clearly, there is a market in the Mid-Ohio Valley and that's unfortunate. We're not commenting on the guilt or innocence of the three men arrested recently. That's for our court system to settle.

Our point is that money people are using on drugs could be used in more constructive ways. And lives wrecked by drug abuse might be saved from misery and pain.

Also, breaking the cycle of drug abuse would deprive dealers of the dollars they desperately crave at the expense of human lives.

We just want to renew the plea made so many times today in our society: Say no to drugs!

And if you do abuse drugs - or know someone who does - realize that sometimes the only way to right the ship is to get professional help as soon as possible. As a friend, be there to offer support, without judgment.
