Ashland University

ASHLAND - Lindsey Tippett, of McConnelsville, is a member of the French Club at Ashland University.

Tippett, who is majoring in French education, serves as president of the French club. She is the daughter of Daniel Tippett and Tracie Huffman and a 2009 graduate of Morgan High School.

The French Club provides members with a forum for social gatherings, discussion groups and lectures pertaining to the French language and culture. Members have the opportunity to expand their conversational use of the language in an informal setting.

Ashland University

ASHLAND - Vanessa Sprague, of Fleming, is a member of Kappa Delta Pi at Ashland University.

Sprague, who is majoring in early childhood education, is the daughter of Douglas and Janelle Sprague of Fleming. She is a 2008 graduate of Waterford High School.

The group's purpose is to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to education and to promote development of worthy educational ideals. The group strives to enhance continued professional growth. Its activities include an annual College of Education chicken barbeque, initiation ceremony and meetings on topics related to professional growth. Membership in Kappa Delta Pi requires a 3.2 grade point average and specific academic requirements.

Ashland University

ASHLAND - Marissa Uhrig, of Marietta, is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa at Ashland University.

Uhrig, who is majoring in computer art and graphics, is a 2010 graduate of Marietta Senior High School.

The Omicron Delta Kappa Society (ODK) recognizes and encourages superior scholarship, leadership and exemplary character. Students inducted into ODK must be juniors and seniors within the Top 35 percent academically of their class. The Society recognizes achievement in scholarship; athletics; campus or community service, social and religious activities, and campus government; journalism, speech and the mass media; and the creative and performing arts. Emphasis is on the whole person, both as a member of the college community and as a contributor to a better society.

Miami University

OXFORD, Ohio - Timothy Brenton Stehly, of Marietta, was among 894 students from Miami University who received degrees during fall commencement exercises Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, in Millett Hall. Stehly received a bachelor of arts degree .

University of Maine

MACHIAS, Maine - KyLynn Adams, of Fleming, was among more than 260 students from the University of Maine at Machias named to the dean's list for the fall 2011 semester.

Xavier University

CINCINNATI - Victoria Riess, of Marietta, has received the Buschmann Award from Xavier University in Cincinnati. She will graduate from Marietta High School in 2012, and is active in cheerleading.

Riess, the daughter of Amanda and Kevin Riess, plans to major in occupational therapy. The Buschmann Award is based on a student's record in high school and amounts vary.

Miami University

OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University students who achieved a 3.5 or better grade point average for second semester 2011-2012 have been named to the dean's list recognizing academic performance: Annalea Glynn Thompson of Marietta, Katelyn Rita Tornes of Marietta, and Joseph Baker Palm of Williamstown.

Ashland University

ASHLAND - Craig Call, of Little Hocking, is a member of Delta Mu Delta at Ashland University.

Call, who is majoring in business management, is a 2008 graduate of Warren High School.

The purpose of Delta Mu Delta is to recognize and reward superior scholastic achievement by business administration students. Students must be in the top 20 percent of their class with a minimum GPA of 3.5. Delta Mu Delta sponsors two annual field trips and occasionally arranges for visiting speakers.

ASHLAND - Vanessa Sprague, of Fleming, is a member of the Human Trafficking Awareness Group at Ashland University.

Sprague, who is majoring in early childhood education, is the daughter of Douglas and Janelle Sprague of Fleming. She is a 2008 graduate of Waterford High School.

The Human Trafficking Awareness Group (HTAG) started out of a spring break mission's trip in 2008 through Ashland University's Isaiah Project. As a team, they spent a week ministering to individuals in the Tenderloin District of San Francisco. While there, mission's base leaders shared their knowledge of human trafficking with the group.

George Mason University

FAIRFAX, Va. - Three local students are among only 250 individuals chosen as National Youth Delegates to attend the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment at George Mason University. The summit will be held from June 24 to 29.

Shania Baker, of Marietta, a student at Marietta High School, has been selected to represent Ohio.

Carmen Thorne, of Marietta, a student at Parkersburg Catholic High School, has been selected to represent Ohio.

Larynn Cutshaw, of Marietta, a student at Waterford High School, has been selected to represent Ohio.

These individuals have been awarded the opportunity to join a select group of students from all across the country to participate in an intensive week-long study of leadership in environmental science and conservation.They were chosen based on academic accomplishments and a demonstrated interest and excellence in leadership in the sciences and conservation studies.

George Mason University along with partners, National Geographic and the National Zoo will welcome the nation's leading youth scholars to Washington, D.C. There will be distinguished faculty, guest speakers, and direct access to elite D.C. practitioners. The week-long program is held at George Mason University. The Summit encourages and inspires young leaders who desire a unique experience focused on successful careers in this dynamic industry.

FAIRFAX, Va. - The following local students have been nominated as National Youth Correspondents for the 2012 Washington Journalism and Media Conference at George Mason University. The conference will be held from July 8 to 13.

Selma Ismail, of Marietta, a student at Marietta High School, has been nominated to represent Ohio.

Caitlin Harrison, of Marietta, a student at Marietta High School, has been nominated to represent Ohio.

Sofie Gosmann-Christensen, of Marietta, a student at Marietta High School, has been nominated to represent Ohio.

Samantha Nelson, of Marietta, a student at Marietta High School, has been nominated to represent Ohio.

Carter Rice, of Parkersburg, a student at Parkersburg High School, has been nominated to represent West Virginia.

These individuals have been awarded the opportunity to join a select group of students from across the country to participate in an intensive week-long study of leadership in journalism and the media. They received their honor because of their academic accomplishments and a demonstrated interest and excellence in leadership in journalism and media studies.

National Youth Correspondents participate in hands-on, experiential learning through decision-making simulations that challenge them to solve problems and explore the creative, practical, and ethical tensions inherent in journalism and media. The experiential portion of the program is complemented by speakers who are well-known leaders in the media community. Presenters include prominent journalists, CEO's of major media outlets, researchers, and recent college graduates already successfully entering the field. Last year's conference included Hoda Kotb, Chuck Todd, Ann Kornblut, and Jessica Yellin.

There will be distinguished faculty, guest speakers, and direct access to elite D.C. practitioners. The week-long program, held at George Mason University campus, encourages and inspires young leaders who desire a unique experience focused on successful careers in this dynamic industry.

National College

PARKERSBURG - National College in Parkersburg has released the dean's list for the first fall terms.

The following students achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.5 out of a possible 4.0 and thus have achieved the honor and privilege of being placed on the dean's list: Cori Pierce, Lori Richards, Teresa Taylor, all of Belpre; Katherine Cassimore and Karen Stump, both of Little Hocking; Tina Bruner of Marietta; Kimberly Norris of Vincent.

Ashland University

ASHLAND - Emily Lachat, of Caldwell, has been accepted to Ashland University for the fall semester of 2012.

Lachat, a senior at Morgan High School, will receive a Ambassador Award of $7,500 annually to attend Ashland University.

Western Governors University

Salt Lake City, Utah - Lori Bebout, of Stockport, has received a Master of Arts degree in Mathematics Education from Western Governors University.

On Feb. 11, the online, nonprofit university held its semi-annual commencement ceremony in Atlanta, Georgia, and celebrated the graduation of more than 2,600 graduates-WGU's largest class ever.

Tippett, who is majoring in French education, is the daughter of Daniel Tippett and Tracie Huffman. She is a 2009 graduate of Morgan High School.

Phi Sigma Iota is the highest academic honor in the fields of foreign languages and literature. Membership is limited to juniors and seniors with a major, minor or concentration in foreign languages and a 3.0 grade point average both overall and in the foreign language courses.

Taylor University

UPLAND, Ind. - Erica West, of Marietta, was named to the fall 2011 dean's list at Taylor University.

Full-time students are named to the dean's list when they have earned a GPA of 3.60 or higher for the term and at least 12 hours carry credit point values.

Columbia College

CHICAGO - Jasmine Al-Masri, a fine arts major from Marietta, has been named to the dean's list at Columbia College for the fall semester 2011.

To be named to the dean's list at Columbia College Chicago, students must have taken at least 12 credit hours and have a 3.75 grade point average or above for that semester.

Aurora University

AURORA, Ill. - Whitney Bills, of Little Hocking, earned high honors on the Aurora University dean's list during the fall 2011 semester.

Bills, a sophomore English major and Warren High School graduate, joins 698 other AU students who were honored for their academic success. The high honors list recognizes students who attain a 4.0 grade-point average while completing at least 12 credit hours during the semester. The regular honors list recognizes students who achieve a GPA of 3.6 to 3.99.

Marietta College

The following local residents participated in Marietta College's Alternative Spring Break program during the week of March 10 to 18 - Keenan Hamilton, of Woodsfield, spent spring break in New Orleans, and Allison Sells, of Fleming, spent spring break in Pine Ridge Native American Reservation in South Dakota.

Ashland University

ASHLAND - Emily Lachat, of Caldwell, has been accepted to Ashland University for the fall semester of 2012.

Lachat, a senior at Morgan High School, will receive a Ambassador Award of $7,500 annually to attend Ashland University.

ASHLAND - Ashland University sophomore Marissa Uhrig, of Marietta, won the Everett S. Caldemeyer Award at the Juried Student Art Exhibition. She is majoring in computer art. Uhrig is a 2010 graduate of Marietta Senior High School.

Uhrig's digital light box print titled, "Growth", won the Everett S. Caldemeyer Award.

Ashland University's 2012 Juried Student Art Exhibition announced the awarded winners on March 15th. This exhibit will be available for viewing in the University's Colburn Gallery until March 30. An outside juror is responsible for choosing both the artworks in the exhibit and the recipients for the awards. The exhibit consisted of 89 artworks chosen from 168 student entries. The 2012 juror was Christy Gray, director of the RED DOT project in Cleveland.
