Beverly man promoted to command sergeant major

Sgt. Maj. Jerry W. Dixon, of Beverly, was promoted to the rank of command sergeant major during a Change of Command ceremony for the 1st Battalion, 174th Air Defense Artillery Regiment on Feb. 26 in Cincinnati.

Dixon will now serve as the senior non-commissioned officer for over 300 Ohio National Guardsman at the 1-174th ADA Regiment, which returned from a deployment to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn in Sept. 2011.

A guard member for nearly 24 years, Dixon has served in the 2-174th Air Defense Artillery Regiment in McConnelsville, and at the 174th ADA Brigade as the brigade operations sergeant major in Columbus. Dixon deployed to Kuwait in support of operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006.

Awards for Dixon include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.

Present at the ceremony were his wife Angela, daughter Rachel Valentine, son Riley and grandson Ian Valentine.
