Don’t skip 2012’s Reno Flag Day Celebration

May 14, 2012
The Marietta Times

We hope details can be worked out so this year's Reno Flag Day celebration takes place along with traditional naming of the Citizen of the Year.

News of the 2012 Flag Day cancellation came out over the weekend. A member of the Reno Lions Club, which organizes the event, plans are to resume the community's annual celebration next year. We'd still like to see a 2012 Flag Day event.

A Lions Club member says organizers learned the Marietta Township Park and Recreation Center was already reserved at the same time as the Flag Day event. That's unfortunate, because the parade and ceremony usually draws hundreds to the Reno area to celebrate this red-white and blue symbol of freedom and to recognize someone in the township who stands out for pitching in.

But, rather than point fingers we hope someone uses their energy in working out a solution. Maybe it's a new location. And don't limit the possibilities to Marietta Township, either. It's just going to be for one year, after all. Or, perhaps, a new date could be worked out so the Reno site could be used. Maybe other area Lions Clubs could pitch in to help Reno pull off the Flag Day celebration.

It just seems like in these trying times that Reno's Flag Day is something people could rally around to celebrate freedom and the American way of life.

We just hope this isn't the last we hear about the 2012 Flag Day celebration.
