4-H programs offer kids a chance to prepare for the fair

4-H project interviews and market livestock skillathons have been announced.

"Learning By Doing," that is what 4-H is all about. Each year 4-H members have a learning opportunity to prepare for one-on-one interviews with a qualified judge while sharing their completed project work. Also, 4-H members will have the opportunity to see project work from other members throughout the county.

Members who have completed outstanding project work will be chosen to represent Washington County at the Ohio State Fair in August. 4-H members' projects will be on display and ribbons earned at judging will be awarded during the Waterford, Washington County, and Barlow Fairs in August and September.

Project judging will be July 9 at Washington County Career Center according to the following schedule:

9 a.m. Natural Resources and Trapping, Forestry, Fishing, Gun Safety and Archery, Beekeeping & Insects, Gardening, Flowers, Cats, Dogs, Pet Rabbits, All Animal Breeding Projects, Llamas and Aplaca, Reptiles and Amhibiana, Small Animals, Cake Decorating, Quilting, Scrapbooking, Veterinary Science, Horse, Creativity, and Self-Determined Projects & Self-Determined Idea Starters

11 a.m. Food and Nutrition, Electricity, Woodworking, and Photography

1 p.m. Miscellaneous Projects, Discovering 4-H, Athletics and Health, Leadership, Child Development, Family History, Money Management, Home Decorating and Designing, Leisure Activities, Rockets and Robotics, Aerospace Science and All Terrain Vehicles, Bicycle, Rope, Small Engines, Lawn Care, Tractor and Machinery Operations, Welding, and Theater Arts

3 to 6 p.m. Public Speaking/Demonstration Contest

6 p.m. Clothing Judging and Skillathon, Style Revue for all clothing projects judged will be held at 7:30 p.m.

As the local fair season approaches, the next educational focus will be the Junior Fair Market Animal Skillathons. These will be held in conjunction with the related fairs.

Thursday, Aug. 16, 8 to 11 a.m. Market Hog, Waterford Fair Grounds; Sunday, Aug. 26, 2 to 5 p.m. Market Steer, Market Lamb, Dairy Feeder Steer, Market Goat, Market Chicken, Market Rabbit, Market Turkey, Jr. Fair Building, Washington County Fairgrounds; Monday, Aug. 27, 5 to7 p.m. Market Steer, Market Lamb, Dairy Feeder Steer, Market Goat, Market Chicken, Market Rabbit, Market Turkey, Jr. Fair Building, Washington County Fairgrounds; Wednesday, Sept. 26, 5 to 7 p.m. Feeder Calf, Barlow Fairgrounds.
