A New Matamoras teen has been indicted by a Washington County Grand Jury for his role in an April accident that killed a longtime Newport Elementary School teacher and seriously injured her 2-year-old grandson.
Jake Minder, 18, was indicted on third-degree felony charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and reckless homicide and a fourth-degree felony charge of vehicular assault, related to the injuries of the child.
Washington County Prosecutor Jim Schneider said Minder could only be convicted of one of the third-degree felonies. Both have a possible sentence of five years in prison.
Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers have said Laura Hoff, 58, of Newport, who was weeks away from retirement, was driving northbound on Ohio 7 in heavy rain in her SUV when she was struck head-on by Minder's pickup truck. Officers said Minder was traveling at unsafe speeds and spun out of control.
Hoff was declared dead at the scene. Her grandson was hospitalized for more than a month.
The other indictments announced Friday will be listed in Monday's edition of The Marietta Times.
