Casto family holds annual reunion

The annual Casto reunion for the descendants of John and Renna Molze Casto was held at Solvay Park on July 7. In attendance were 130 people, including the last two surviving sons, Russell Casto and Ronald Casto. There were attendees from Colorado, Kentucky, New York, Texas, Missouri, and West Virginia.

A potluck dinner was served along with hamburgers and hot dogs prepared by Bill Bloomingdale, Kenny Britton, Chris Casto and Kim Casto. Chris Casto gave the invocation.

Chris Casto, president, conducted the business meeting; Tim Casto gave the treasurer's report and the care committee report. Officers elected for the 2013 reunion were Chris Casto, president; Gary Casto, vice president; Karen Bloomingdale, secretary; Tim Casto, treasurer; Pam Bailey, Kathleen Schneider, and Mark Casto, historians; Diane VanWey, Marcie Warne, and Cheryl Lenington, care committee. In addition, Tim Casto, Ian Casto, Bill Bloomingdale, Chris Casto, Kathleen Schneider, Steve Casto, and Doug and Amy Casto were appointed to the set-up committee for next year's reunion.

Chris Casto and Kim Casto served as auctioneers for the white elephant sale. Ruth Casto was the eldest attending and Adrian Bauer was the youngest. Harold Sheppard, the oldest grandchild of John and Renna Casto was recognized for traveling the furthest, Grand Junction, Colo.

Kathleen Schneider, historian, reported during the year there was one birth: Adrian Bauer born Jan. 10, 2012, to Chelsea Ginther and Brandon Bauer. Two marriages: Jason Casto and Heather Tornes, Aug. 13, 2011, and Michael Weston Casto and Holly Booth, Sept. 10, 2011. Three deaths: Don Casto, Oct. 15, 2011; Bill VanWey, March 24, 2012, and Donald Warne Jr., April 26, 2012.

Pam Bailey reported the descendant tree includes six generations, 463 individuals, 152 marriages and 149 different surnames.

Family members currently serving in the military are: Jeremy Britton, U.S. Air Force, currently serving at Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, Nev.; Scott Myers, U.S. Navy, currently serving in Afghanistan; and Rodney Scott, 779 Engineer Company of the U.S. Army Reserves, currently serving in Parkersburg.

The annual golf outing was held at the Golf Course of West Virginia. Those competing were Russell Casto, Dave Casto, Steve Casto, Brad Bauer, Bruce Casto, Jeff Greene, Tom Bloomingdale, Ron Casto, Brandon Bauer, Chris Casto, Kim Casto, and Ben Casto. The three-man team of Russell Casto, Dave Casto, and Steve Casto were the winners.

The next reunion will be held July 6, 2013, at Solvay Park. The golf outing will be held at Lakeside.
