Off to the races: Furr, Anderson 1st at Broughton

Prep cross country

August 27, 2012
By Mike Morrison - Sports Writer , The Marietta Times

Over 200 prep runners competed in Saturday's 13th Annual Elizabeth S. Broughton Memorial Cross Country Invitational at the Broughton Nature Area, and when it was all said and done Caldwell's Jenna Furr and Fort Frye's Jordan Anderson claimed the top spots.

Furr completed the 5K run with a time of 21:03.65 to defeat runner up Emily Cass (21:31.14) of Athens by almost a half a minute.

"I was able to pace myself in the beginning," said Furr of her winning run. "The first mile always goes easy for me so I tried to take it easier today and it helped."

Caldwell Cross Country coach Dugan Hill was not only pleased with Furr's run, but his whole team as well, as Caldwell placed second to Athens in the girls team standings.

"It was nice for us to get second overall,' said Hill, whose Caldwell girls placed five runners in the top thirty. "Jenna's one of the key pieces that helped us get there. The better she runs, the better we finish."

Rounding out the top five in the girls competition were Warren's Hannah Dugan (22:10.80), New Lexington's Anna Gilles (22:32.42), and Athens' Ashley Horsley (22:37.14).

Marietta's Julie Forbes (22:38.80) placed just outside the top five in sixth and Caldwell's Katie Sailing (22:48.39) and Fort Frye's Natalie Hart (22:51.05) put together strong runs as well, placing seventh and eighth respectively.

Athens paced the girls competition with 39 points to edge Caldwell (63) while Marietta (99), Union Local (126), and Fort Frye (133) rounded out the top five.

In the boys' team competition it would once again be Athens (72) claiming the top spot, with Fort Frye (90), Caldwell (95), Warren (96) and Meadowbrook (122) claiming top five finishes.

Anderson ran a very strong 17:30.39 to edge Caldwell's Tanner Harding (17:36.46) in the boys' individual competition.

"Tanner (Harding) gave me good competition today," said Anderson, whose teammates Ford McElroy and Matthew Cheeseman placed eleventh and twelfth respectively. "Running together with him really helped me out a lot."

Fort Frye acting head coach Bobbi Webb was pleased to see the hard work that Anderson puts in at practice pay dividends on the course.

"Jordan's come along really well," Webb said. "He practices very hard and ran a great race today."

Marietta head coach Dale Leeper was once again quite pleased with not only the outstanding turnout, as more than a dozen teams participated in the event, but the support of everyone responsible for making the annual event such a success.

"We think of this as a premiere event both competitively and facility wise," said Leeper. "The Broughton foundation is a great outfit.

"Very few cross country programs at the high school level have this kind of facility."
