School year opening day antics meant to encourage learning

August 27, 2012
The Marietta Times

Thinking back to our days in school we know learning is hard work. Now, think of our teachers and how hard they work to make sure the learning process is a success.

Knowing how hard education can be, it's refreshing to see all the different ways teachers and school administrators around Washington County are welcoming students back to the classroom for the new school year.

We especially like Waterford Elementary's red carpet rolled out for students last week. The demonstration told something all students should be told: You're special and the school staff is here to help you learn.

And if you have a little fun on the way through the school year, that's great, too. Area teachers are starting out on the right foot by showing students that education doesn't have to be synonymous with drudgery and seemingly useless memorization.

We're sure there will be more examples of fun and excitement in education throughout the school year. We'll report on many of those examples because they're out of the ordinary, special, and unique.

There's so much to learn beyond textbooks and local educators appear to be eager to go the extra mile to teach our children. That means a lot specifically to parents and to this community in general.
