25 years ago

- A 92 percent cut in phone tolls between Belpre and Marietta was proposed by the Belpre Area Chamber of Commerce. This would drop the charge from $4.13 to 33 cents.

- Military bands are set to perform at the Marietta High School auditorium. The U.S. Marine Band will perform at 8 p.m. tonight and the U.S. Army Band will perform at 3 p.m. tomorrow. The Marietta Times is sponsoring the free concerts.

100 years ago

- James Whiting was arraigned and charged with the assault and battery of Richard Davis. The assault occurred Saturday, Sept. 21. Whiting was fined $50 and must spend 10 days in jail.

- The Marietta band will give a concert at the city park, Thursday, Sept. 26. Tunes will include "On the Alert," "Spring Morning Serenade," "Spanish Waltzes," "Visions," "My Hero," "Girl of My Dreams" and "The Comic Rag."
