PATASKALA - Waterford's Brandyn Offenberger outlasted Belpre's Sam Petty and Newark Catholic's David Meurer in a three-hole playoff during Tuesday's Ohio Division 3 district meet at Cumberland Trail Golf Course, and advanced to next week's state meet in Columbus.
The top four teams, along with the top four individuals not members of a qualifying team, punched their ticket for the state event scheduled for Oct. 12-13.
Offenberger, Petty and Meurer tied for the last qualifying spot after each posted a 77. On the second playoff hole, Petty was knocked out of the competition when he made par while the other two golfers made birdie. Offenberger parred the next hole and Meurer bogeyed to give the Waterford senior the win.
As a team, Belpre placed sixth at 335. The Golden Eagles also were represented by Alex Perry (82), Brennen Ferrell (84), Hayden Plummer (92) and Bryce Pittenger (98).
Waterford was 10th at 356 and received contributions from Cameron Bosner (85), Brent Ginther (93), Montana Brooker (101) and Alex Braham (114).
By virtue of its fifth player's score, defending Division 3 state champion Wellington claimed the district title at 309. Second place went to Columbus Academy, also with a 309.
