Carl Edward Darnell, 93, of Devola, passed away Tuesday, (Oct. 2, 2012) at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
He was born Monday, Sept. 22, 1919, in Coffeyville, Kan., to the late Frank W. and Alice Sykes Darnell. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Marines. He was wounded on June 7, 1945, on Ryukyu Island, and had been in battles on Okinawa in the Asiatic Pacific, and participated in the occupation of China. Carl was honorably discharged Feb. 16, 1946.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church and Harmar Lodge #390 F. & A.M. Carl worked as a self-employed auto mechanic, owner of Darnell Alignment Center at Second and Greene streets. He had worked for Mahone Tire Service for 25 years before opening his own alignment shop. Carl's passion was music. He was happiest playing with his band the Mel-Tones, where he played every weekend at the American Legion Post 64 and other local clubs, with his most recent band Swingin' Country, he played his favorite kind of music, classic country.
He is survived by three daughters, Beverly A. Hess (Jerry) of Urbana, Ohio, Linda K. Thrasher (Kelsey) of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Deborah L. McCutcheon (Douglas) of Waterford, Ohio. There are nine grandchildren, Candace Dillion, Eric Hess (Heidi), Kevin Thrasher, Michael Thrasher (Jessica), Dave Cline (Roxanne), Jeff Cline (Jessica), Jason Cline (LeAnn), Dustin Cline (Ashley) and Jennifer Heiss (Lee).
Carl has 26 great-grandchildren, Joshua, Jessie, Dakota, Courtney, Annie, Tabitha, Devin, Brandon, Wyatt, Nathaniel, Gage, Lacey, Christopher, Kailee, Lane, Sydnee, Briceson, Tyler, Emma, Levi, Alana, Trevor, Lee, Jr., Larissa, Lakyn and Taylor. He has three half brothers, Floyd Allen (Ann), Ted Allen, and Don Allen (Nat), all of Oklahoma; and one half sister, Faye McGee (Joe) of Pensacola, Fla.
On Jan. 18, 1938, he married Betty N. Bone and she preceded him in death on June 26, 2009, and also his parents, two half-sisters Elsie and Jorene, one grandson Kerry Thrasher, and an infant great-grandchild Cline.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday (Oct. 6, 2012) at 11 a.m. at Hadley Funeral Home, Reno Chapel, 1021 Pike St., Marietta, with Rev Gene Ferrell officiating. Burial with Military honors will be held at East Lawn Memorial Park following the services. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday (Oct. 5, 2012) from 4 to 8 p.m.
