Marietta College's Institute for Learning in Retirement announces its fall schedule of courses. The Institute for Learning in Retirement is a community based organization of retirement age people who share a love of learning. The cost is $30 per course.
Fall courses:
All That Glitters ... The American Dream in American Literature. This course will examine the American Dream through literature, considering its ideology, its literary representations, and challenges to the Dream and its attainment. Instructor: Nicole Livengood, PhD., from 3 to 5 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 24-Nov. 12, Thomas Hall, Room 124.
Music for Keyboard Instruments - Part II In this course, a continuation of last year's offering, organist David Nuss will lead the class in listening to and discussing compositions for piano organ, and harpsichord that were not covered before. Music of other countries will be considered. At least one session will be held off campus at an area church in order to have access to a pipe organ. Pianist Barbara Beitel will be a guest performer and participant, from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 25-Nov. 13, Herman Fine Arts, Room 205.
Sherlock and Mrs. Brown. Sherlock Holmes is such a vivid fictional character that many believe he actually lived. Instructor: Jim Hoy, from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 26-Nov. 14.
The People's Constitution. This class will take its start in the controversy concerning the Affordable Care Act and it will find its far-ranging inquiry leading to the grand proclamation of popular sovereignty and to the fundamental questions it implies. Instructor: Robert S. Hill, Ph.D., from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 27-Nov. 15. Brown Petroleum, Room 210
The Secret Life of the Brain. This course explores selected mysteries and marvels of the human brain, at a level that assumes no technical background. Instructor: Bill McNeelehy, Ph.D., from 3 to 5 p.m. Fridays, Sept. 38-Nov. 16, Thomas Hall, Room 124.
