- Marietta Memorial Hospital will offer a first aid course Oct. 20 from 7 to 9 p.m. The session is aimed toward the first aid of infants and children. The session covers poisonings, cuts, broken bones, bites and fevers, as well as injury prevention tips.
- Elkem Metals Co. donated $20,000 to Washington County. The payment was for a citation issued by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency for a failed smokestack test.

- Ed Hayes, of Parkersburg, is being held on a "murderous assault" charge on Frank Harris, manager of the Bijou and Lyric theatres.
- Samuel Beren was reunited with his wife and son after eight years. The two made the trip from Russia.
