Prep cross country: Maggie Drazba claims third state title in record time

October 29, 2012
From staff reports , The Marietta Times

ONA, W.Va. - Talk about going out in style!

St. Marys cross country standout Maggie Drazba not only claimed her third individual Class AA-A state championship on Saturday at Cabell Midland High School, but she did so in record time. Drazba blistered the course in 17 minutes, 17.89 seconds, to win by more than a two-minute margin over runnerup Katie Jan of Frankfort.

Drazba, a senior who is being heavily recruited for her distance prowess, averaged a 5 minute, 35 second pace per mile in setting a new state standard.

She wasn't the only one to break a course record as Cabell Midland senior Jacob Burcham finished in 14 minutes, 58.04 seconds to dominate the Class AAA boys competition.

Burcham and Drazba are both nationally-recognized runners who have put distance running in West Virginia in the national spotlight.

Drazba wasn't the only local runner to earn all-state honors on Saturday as Caleb Moore of Doddridge County was the runnerup in the Class AA-A boys race. Ritchie County's Johnny Hogue was third and St. Marys' Jordan Whitehair placed eighth.
