WILLIAMSTOWN - The Williamstown High School varsity cheerleaders will be heading to the state competition in Charleston for the third year in a row.
The cheerleading squad became the West Virginia Region IV Class A Champions, said cheerleading coach Tina Beck.
The 'Jackets competed against seven other squads on Nov. 3 and won. The win earned them the right to be one of the eight squads in the state to compete for the West Virginia Class A state title.
Beck said to advance to the state competition the team has to win or place as the runner-up at regionals. The statewide competition will be held Dec. 8 at the Charleston Civic Center.
"Last year we got third at state," said Beck.
Squad members are Peyton Johnson, Allison Hurst, Kaitlyn Guckert, Courtney Townsend, Meagan Vaughan, Hannah Jordan, Skyler Phillips, Brooke Shockey, Jessica Banfield, McKayla Britton, Kayla Masters and Savanna Parks.
Beck said she became interested in coaching when her daughters were interested in the sport and has remained in the position since.
A second-grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary Center, Beck has been coaching the team for about 12 years.
She said she hopes the team can advance in the Little Kanawha Conference competition Thursday at the high school. She mentioned Tyler Consolidated as being among the competition at Williamstown High School Thursday.
They (the cheerleaders) will be working hard to make sure they perform just as well as they did at regionals, Beck said.
