PARKERSBURG - Morgan Liedtke and Brooke Borich hit treys when Fort Frye needed them the most in the fourth quarter Saturday night as the visiting Cadets notched a 48-41 girls basketball win over Parkersburg South at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center in the Patriots' season opener.
Fort Frye, now 3-0, got a 3-ball by Liedtke from the corner with 4:01 left to snap a 35-all tie.
Then after South's Keya Bartlett responded with a trey of her own to knot the score again at 38 at the 3:10 mark, Liedtke canned another three for a 41-38 Cadet advantage at 2:56. Bartlett's basket at 2:03 narrowed the gap to 41-40, and South was within two at 43-41 with just 1:02 remaining until Borich bagged a trey from out front to the left at 49.2 seconds for a five-point, 46-41, spread. Then Fort Frye iced the win on Diedre Combs' two free throws with only 12.9 seconds to play.
Liedtke finished with 14 points for the Cadets, while Taylor Buchanan netted nine and Borich eight. For South, Bartlett also tallied 14 and Taryn McCutcheon added 11.
Fort Frye led 15-11 after one quarter, hitting seven of eight foul shots and Liedtke draining two treys. But the Patriots used a 12-4 second stanza, keyed by a 10-0 run in the first four minutes, to surge in front 23-19 by halftime.The third period saw South go up by seven, 28-21, on Bartlett's 3-bomb from the corner. But the Cadets scored 12 of the last 15 points in the quarter, including Borich's go-ahead trey (32-31) with 1:11 left, to push into a 33-31 lead going to the fourth quarter.
Alex Anderson's corner trey for South with 5:09 left in the game lifted the Patriots, who next play at Wheeling Park Friday, into their last lead of the night at 35-34.
