Women's college basketball: Marietta women fall to TU

LEXINGTON, Ky. -Transylvania University used a huge second half to pull away from Marietta College and post a 66-42 win Tuesday in women's basketball action. The match up was the final game of the Pat Deacon Classic.

Transylvania (7-2 overall) took advantage of 15 first half Marietta turnovers to take a 22-19 lead after the first period. 13 of Transylvania's 22 first half points came off of Marietta turnovers.

Sophomore Heather Booth scored the first four points of the second period to give Marietta the lead, 23-22. Transylvania responded with a 26-6 run over the next eight minutes to take control of the game, 48-49, with 11:17 left in the game.

Transylvania shot 54.5 percent from the floor in the second half and extended its lead to as many as 24 points. TU had four players in double figures led by sophomore Nicole Coffman's 22 points.

Freshman Alex Botkin and sophomore Alex McKenzie posted double-doubles. Botkin tallied 10 points and 13 rebounds, while McKenzie had 10 points and 12 boards. Freshman Katelyn Smith chipped in with 13 points.

Junior Tori Dixon hit four three-pointers and was Marietta's leading scorer with 14 points. Booth finished the day with 12 points and four rebounds.

Marietta shot 32.7 percent (17-of-52) from the floor, 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from three-point range and 40.0 percent (4-of-10) at the free throw line. Transylvania was 26-of-70 (37.1 percent) from the floor, 6-of-17 (35.3 percent) behind the arc and 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) at the charity stripe.

Transylvania dominated the glass grabbing 50 rebounds to just 34 for Marietta. Transylvania committed 14 turnovers, while Marietta turned the ball over 20 times.

Marietta is off until after Christmas when the Pioneers travel to Hiram College for a 3 p.m. game on Saturday, December 29.
