25 years ago

- A 35-mile-long oil slick floating in the Ohio River from a collapsed storage tank near Pittsburgh is expected to be cleaned up before it reaches the Mid-Ohio Valley.

- The Capitol Christmas tree will remain on display, decorated and lighted, until Jan. 7.

100 years ago

- A blinding snow storm delayed travel in the city. Trains are running behind and there are reports of several near accidents because of low visibility.

- The local post office saw an increase in business. People are sending small parcels regularly.
