Edna Mae Schenkel, 88, of Lower Salem, passed away at 2:30 p.m. at her home on Friday (Jan. 4, 2013). She was born on April 25, 1924, at Bonn to I. O. "Bob" and Virginia Grogan Carpenter. She was a homemaker and a graduate of Salem-Liberty High School, Class of 1943. Edna enjoyed watching birds, working puzzles and loved her family.
On June 5, 1943, she married Cecil Schenkel, who preceded her in death on June 15, 2009.
Edna is survived by her daughter, Shirley Hockenberry of Whipple; three grandchildren, Robert (Ann) Hockenberry of Mineral Wells, W.Va., Brenda (Dan) Waterman of Lower Salem and Rick (Christy) Hockenberry of Lowell; five grandchildren, James Brown, Nicholas (Michelle) Brown, Daniel Waterman, Anna (Wayne) Guckert, Aaron Hockenberry; two stepgrandchildren, Jaymie (Chad) Fox and Heather Metz; and great-great newborn grandson, Rodney Guckert; two stepgreat-great-grandchildren, Blake and Corey Fox. She is also survived by her sister, Erma Carpenter; two sisters-in-law, Betty L. Schenkel and Ruth Biehl; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son-in-law, Ronald Hockenberry; and four siblings.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday (Jan. 9) at 1 p.m. at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Roger Rush officiating. Burial will follow in Salem Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 p.m. today with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Tuesday all day with family present 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Messages of sympathy may be sent at www.mslfuneralhome.com.
