Monday marked the only home meet the Marietta High swim team will have this season, the Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational, and the Tigers represented it well, finishing second overall.

"Our team did really well," said Marietta head coach Walt Teer. "We were second overall, boys and girls. We had some good efforts. We had some kids drop in time."

The Tri Valley Scotties took home first prize, while the Williamstown girls team finished third.

Marietta was led by the performances of six freshmen and several inexperienced upperclassmen.

"We have a lot of first year swimmers," Teer said. "We are definitely in a rebuilding year. Going forward, we're looking to have probably the strongest girls' team we've ever had."

The Williamstown girls were led by first place finishes in the 200 yard freestyle (2:19.46) and the 500 yard freestyle (6:14.96) by Kristianna Weppler. Weppler, along with Sarah DeBolt, Savannha Dedrick and Shealee Mossor, finished second in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 4:45.35.

As for the meet, it did not attract the number of schools it usually does.

"We had a smaller turnout than usual," Teer said. "The meet went by really fast, which some people liked.

"Next year we're gonna try to get some rewards and promote it more."

Up next for the Tigers will be the sectional tournament at Ohio University on Feb. 9.
