25 years ago

- The Marietta YMCA will host a peace celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31. Mayor Nancy Hollister will speak and several bands will perform.

- Mathews Street will soon be called Matthew Street. The debate on correct spelling for the street dates back to the 19th century. All old street signs have been ordered to be destroyed.

100 years ago

- A.J. Fish, of Belpre, was arrested on a charge of threatening his wife.

- Five prisoners in Huntington, W.Va. escaped for the third time within one week.
