Fort Frye senior Lexi Huck, center sitting, signed a National Letter of Intent Friday to continue her education and play softball at West Virginia University Institute of Technology. Seated to Huck’s right is Fort Frye head softball coach Barb Sleek and to her left is WVU Tech head softball coach Karin Gadberry. Standing, left to right, are Jon Huck (brother), Frank Huck (father) and Leslee Huck (mother).
At Fort Frye, Huck owns a 3.64 GPA in the classroom.
"I visited West Virginia Tech, and they really made me feel at home," Huck said. "I also liked the coach."
Huck said she also considered Ohio Valley University in Vienna, W.Va.
Tech, an NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) school, is located in Montgomery, W.Va., about a 2-1/2 hour drive from Beverly. The Golden Bears softball squad, 29-16 overall in 2012, is coached by Karin Gadberry.
The 5-foot-8, right-handed throwing and hitting Huck is expected to be positioned at first base but can also play third.
"Lexi is a good, tall target at first base," said veteran Fort Frye head softball coach Barb Sleek. "She also hits for power."
Last season, Huck helped the Cadets post an 18-8 overall record.
In 22 games, she batted .328 (22-for-67) with one home run, six doubles, 14 runs-batted-in, and 17 runs scored.
Huck also stole three bases.
In the field, she had a .974 fielding percentage with only two errors.
After the season, Huck was both a Pioneer Valley Conference and Ohio Valley Athletic Conference honoree.
Sleek said her protege is a "hard-working" softball player, who trains in the offseason.
"Where she lives, she works on her hitting with her father and grandfather in a batting cage with a pitching machine in a barn," Sleek said.
An all-around athlete at Fort Frye, Huck is also a volleyball letterwinner.
Huck is the daughter of Frank and Leslee Huck. She has an older brother Jon.
