Injured man still in serious condition

February 18, 2013
From staff reports , The Marietta Times

Dale E. Gerken, 79, of Whipple continued to be listed in serious condition Sunday at The Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center.

He received multiple injuries Feb. 11 when a bull charged, knocked him to the ground, and trampled Gerken during a veterinary visit on his farm.

According to Washington County Sheriff Larry Mincks, witnesses said the bull hit Gerken, sending him several feet into the air and rendering him unconscious. The animal then began stomping on Gerken.

Gerken's grandson and the veterinarian were able to get the bull away from Gerken who sustained a severe head injury and possibly broken ribs from the attack.

He was initially transported to Marietta Memorial Hospital and scheduled to undergo surgery for the head injury, but Gerken's condition worsened and he was life-flighted to Columbus early Tuesday morning.
