Ila Ida ‘Doc’ Burke

Ila Ida "Doc" Burke, 90, of Lowell, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and loving wife passed away peacefully on (April 13, 2013) at 6:38 p.m. at her granddaughter's home in Marietta, surrounded by her family.

Ila was born May 8, 1922, in Coal Run, Ohio, a daughter of the late Vernie and Georgianna Dalton Armstrong.

An opportunistic traveler, she also enjoyed reading, swimming, and spending time with her family and friends. She had served as chaplain of the Lowell Unit #750 Women's Auxiliary, was a member of the Marietta Chapter of TOPS, had been a 4-H advisor, and was an avid collector of angels and bells. She had attended the Wesleyan Methodist Church and was instrumental in the continuance of the Cedar Ridge Homecoming Reunion.

Ila was a 1941 graduate of Beverly High School.

In 1944, she married her husband of 68 years, Robert Burke Sr. Together they had five children, Patricia Singer of Stafford, Ohio, Wilma "Tina" Burke of Marietta, Wanda Hazelwood of Jacksonville, Fla., Darlene (Harry) Ogletree of Marietta, and Robert (Gwendolyn) Burke, Jr. of Trotwood, Ohio. Grandchildren include Robin (Isaac) Holmes, Valerie (Roy) Kampmeier, Misty (Thomas) Mahefkey, Mischa (Roger) Singer-Smith, Corey Singer, Sara (Aaron) Hess, Robbie (Liz) Burke, Amanda Burke, Crystal Mills, Philista Mills, Jasmine Mills, Micah Mills, Stephanie Adams and Denise Hatchett. In addition, she also has 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Sarah; her brother Richard; twin sister, Lila; and two sons-in-law, Enos Singer and James Hazelwood Jr.

Ila will be laid to rest in Greenlawn Cemetery. Her family will greet friends on Tuesday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (April 17, 2013) at the funeral home.

It is suggested that memorial contributions may be directed to either the Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department, 102 Oak Grove Lane, Marietta, Ohio, 45750; or the L-A Fire & Rescue, P.O. Box 406, Lowell, Ohio, 45744.
