William S. Stevens

William S. Stevens, 78, of Naples, Fla. (formerly of Marietta) passed away on Saturday (June 8, 2013) after a brief illness.

He was born Dec. 12, 1934, in Lucasville, Ohio, to Ernest and Laurinda Stevens. He was a 1954 graduate of Marietta High School, where he still holds the record for being the only person to letter in 4 sports in one year. Bill was a 1958 graduate of Ohio University (civil engineering), which he attended on a football scholarship after being named to the All-Ohio team in high school. He was a member of The United Church of Christ at the Lighthouse in Naples, Fla. where he served as council president.

On Aug. 18, 1957, Bill married his high school sweetheart, Jeanette Jones. Jeanette was by his side when he passed away.

Bill worked as a construction estimator/project manager for 55 years. He was still working part-time as a construction consultant at the time of his death.

Bill will be remembered for his sense of humor, his love of family, and his desire to help others. He never asked for anything in return.

In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by his two children, Greg Stevens (Betty Heacock) of Sebring, Fla., and Vicki Stevens Butler of Mentor, Ohio; his two grandchildren, Michael Butler II of Tallahassee, Fla., and Megan Butler of Mentor, Ohio; his brother, Carl Stevens (Lynn) of Woodstock, Ga.; his sister, Margaret White, of Augusta, Ga.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Everett Stevens; and his sisters, Sally Eileen and Barbara Faye.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday (June 12, 2013) at Hadley Funeral Home, 500 Fifth St., Marietta, Ohio, 45750. Interment to follow in East Lawn Memorial Park. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
