Carmen "Pat" Mendez Smith, 86, of Marietta, passed away on Monday (July 1, 2013) at the Camden Clark Medical Center St. Joseph Campus. She was born on Friday, Aug. 13, 1926, in New York City, to the late Luis and Otilia (Jove) Mendez.
Carmen was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church, Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 59, Marietta, Star of the East No. 102 and the White Shrine of Jerusalem No. 12. On Feb. 17, 1945, Carmen married Dean Carson Smith in Brooklyn, N.Y., who preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 1994.
She is survived by three daughters, Rhea (John) Russell, Rena (Ralph) Thorne, Resa Smith; five grandchildren, John Russell II, Rhea Bomer, Carina Wittekind, Chris Wittekind, Carmen Thorne; five great-grandchildren, Adam Bomer, Justin Bomer, Nathan Bomer, Courtney Arthur, Savannah Arthur; three sisters, Mary Franola of Clearwater, Fla., Adele Walsh of Wellsville, N.Y. and Carol Sengel of Staten Island, N.Y.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Alice Collaro, and godchildren Alicia Schenkman and Tommy Collaro.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday (July 5, 2013) at St. Mary Catholic Church, 506 Fourth St., Marietta, with Msgr. John Michael Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in East Lawn Memorial Park. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday (July 4) at the Hadley Funeral Home Reno Chapel, 1021 Pike St., Marietta, with an Order of the Eastern Star Service taking place at 8 p.m.
