- More than 700 marijuana plants, with a street value of a half-million dollars, were confiscated by the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
- Marietta's Jackson Pool will have its second 1988 water show at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5. Participants will demonstrate skills learned during American Red Cross learn-to-swim sessions.

- Jacob P. Marsch was severely injured when an emery wheel flew to pieces at the plant of the Marietta Fruit Package & Lumber Company. One of the wheel fragments struck Marsch, opening a large gash on his head, right above his eye.
- Herbert Williams, a telegraph operator at the Buckeye Pipe Line, returned to his home on Front Street and found a man named Simpson, a conductor on the B & O, in his home. Williams' wife was sporting a black eye and Williams attacked Simpson. The police were called but no arrests were made.
