Joseph A. Helm Jr., 84, of Marietta, died Thursday (Aug. 1, 2013).
He was born in Stone, Kentucky, on March, 30, 1929. Later his family moved to Union, W.Va., where he grew up. Joe was a Korean conflict veteran serving in Anchorage, Alaska. He graduated from North Carolina State with a degree in mechanical engineering. Joe was employed by Union Carbide, where he stayed for 35 years. He was a dedicated member of Gilman United Methodist Church. He was a member of the choir and taught Sunday school for many years.
Joe is survived by the love of his life, Nancy, who he married on June, 2, 1957. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two sons, Joseph III and Michael (Michelle), former daughter-in-law, Ginny Cottrill (Ken), and his grandchildren, Matthew, Ryan, Christina, Lauren and Jesse. He is also survived by two sisters, Jean and Yvonne (Spot). He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Anna, two brothers, Lester and Moyer, and two sisters, Elizabeth and Geneva.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date. The family requests no flowers. Donations may be sent to the Gilman Choir in his memory.
