"Stretch," the steer of 14-year-old Mike Lowe of Little Hocking, was named grand champion at the Washington County Fair's market steer show. Lowe spent three hours every day for the past few months, grooming and feeding his steer, and said that he "fanned him a lot this summer because of the heat." Stretch will be auctioned off with the 30 other steer that competed.

The Washington County Fair ended last night with a "big bang." Due to a schedule jammed with evening programs, the fireworks display, set for 10:30 p.m., did not go off until after 12:30 a.m. Many sleepy residents were shaken out of bed and telephoned the police department to find out what was going on.

After a fight which had been waged several weeks, Marietta City Council authorized the borrowing of $499 to purchase street lamps and other electrical equipment for the First Ward. The resolution was opposed by three councilmen who are against spending money on lighting while the department is under the present management.
