MINERAL WELLS, W.Va. - The Wednesday series between the golf programs from Parkersburg South, Parkersburg High and Marietta followed a trend the past three weeks that kept the mood upbeat in the Patriots' camp.
At Woodridge Golf Club, South nearly eclipsed 150 for a team score for the first time in three years. Instead, the Patriots settled for a 152 which proved to be seven strokes better than PHS (159) and eight lower than Marietta (160).
South, which competes at today's Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Class 5A Championship in Wheeling, also finished in first place at Parkersburg Country Club and Marietta Country Club for the sweep against the Big Reds and Tigers.

Marietta golfer Nick Thieman chips onto the fifth green during Wednesday’s tri-meet with Parkersburg South and Parkersburg High at Woodridge Golf Club. Thieman carded 4-over par 39.
Taking medalist honors yesterday was South sophomore Adeena Shears, who needed just six putts during her first five holes and carded a 1-under par 34.
"Once I hit the putts, it felt good - apparently it did," Shears said.
Shears finished with 14 putts, but that was one putt higher than teammate Alex Schreckengost, who turned in the second lowest round of the day after firing a 36. The junior birdied three holes, including two to start his round. A double-bogey on the third hole brought him back to earth.

PHS closed out the Wednesday series with three second-place showings. Austin Davis paced the Big Reds with a 37 followed by Lauryn Davidson (40), Lucas Prine (41) and Remy Toncray (41).
"All three matches were competitive and today we did well to finish in the 150s," PHS coach Don Snider said. "I was impressed with our four, five and six players. We even counted our No. 6 man (Toncray), so we are trying to develop that depth.
"I still like our chances going into regionals."
Marietta played without one its starters in Nathan Matheny, who is scheduled to return to the lineup in the Tigers' next match Monday against Warren at Marietta Country Club. The scoring breakdown for Marietta included Garrett Bertram (38), Nick Thieman (39), Jeffrey Hensler (40) and Max Fitzgerald (43).
"We've been stressing course management because we have been poor in that area," Marietta coach John Doughty said. "It showed today that we are going in the right direction."
