Betsy Mitchell, daughter of James and Diane Mitchell of Marietta, arrived in Seoul, South Korea, as a member of the U.S. Olympics swim team. In the 1984 Olympics, she won a silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke, and a gold medal as part of the 400-meter individual medley relay team. Mitchell holds the world record at 2:08:60 in the 200-meter backstroke, and the American record in the 100-meter backstroke at 59.89 seconds.

About 200 members of the Sons and Daughters of the Pioneer Rivermen will attend their annual banquet at the Lafayette Motor Hotel. Capt. J. W. Rutter will entertain with a series of photographs made from original negatives by Capt. Jesse P. Hughes along the Ohio, Kanawha, and Big Sandy rivers between 1900 and 1904.
