Mildred Schwendeman supervised the cooking of 1,500 chickens, 500 pounds of beef, and 575 pounds of sausage for Lowell's Octoberfest. Chair of the food booth, Schwendeman has been freezing cabbage rolls since June, and everyone in the community has pitched in by peeling and slicing potatoes to make a half-ton of German potato salad for the event.

Trustees of the Public Library took action to curb loud and unruly conduct at the main library during evening hours. A man will be hired to act as disciplinarian during the time when junior and senior high school students use the facility as a study center.

Diphtheria has taken a terrible toll on the families of Salem Township and the neighboring districts. A daughter of Mr. J. W. Holshu was the fifth child of the family to die within a brief time, all having suffered from the same disease.
