Hills Department Store has hired about 175 employees and will open its doors for business this Saturday. Members of Laborers Local 639 plan to be in front of the store urging shoppers to go elsewhere, as company officials hired non-union workers for most of the construction.

Due to a drop in property valuation, Warren School District's operating revenue from local taxes is down to a level that threatens the continuation of the present excellent program. The board will ask for a two-mill additional levy in the November election.

During the past year Washington County collected $129,790.03 in taxes, and $145,153.80 in miscellaneous collections, for a total income of $274,943.83. Total expenditures were $168,888.20, including $16,087.89 for bridges and culverts; $27,979.07 for charitable purposes; $26,269.52 for salaries of officials; $9,169.59 for salaries of deputies, clerks, and assistants; and $33,560.11 for roads.
