Darrel L. Schultheis, 94, of Marietta, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded in love by his family on Nov. 24, 2013, following a sudden illness.
He was born June 30, 1919, in Newport, Ohio, a son of Jacob E. (Jake) and Chloe Thompson Schultheis.
Darrel was a graduate of Newport High School, and a World War II Veteran serving in the United States Navy for nearly eight years. His time of service was aboard a Submarine Tender which carried out submarine operations in Rosneath, Firth of Clyde, Scotland, as well as the Aleutian Islands. At the conclusion of his military career, Darrel returned to his roots in Newport and was a successful farmer for many years, harvesting peaches, apples and strawberries in both Ohio and Florida.
Darrel was a devout Christian and enjoyed his many years of fellowship at the Newport United Methodist Church where he served as a trustee, and the past several years as a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Marietta.
In 1963, he purchased the O'Neill Insurance Agency in Marietta from C. William O'Neill and thus began the Schultheis Agency's legacy of service to their clients in Marietta and the surrounding areas. In 1987, the Agency was purchased by his son; however, Darrel maintained an office with him until his "semi-retirement" at the age of 91, where he enjoyed visiting with his many friends and former clients.
On April 24, 1942, he married the former Helen V. Warren, also of Newport, who was the mother of his three children. After 62 years of marriage, Helen preceded him in death in November of 2004. In November of 2006, he married Avalene Goodnight McMahon, who survives him.
Darrel was very active in his communities. He served 12 years as a member of the Newport Board of Education, and was instrumental in the consolidation of the high schools in that area. He was also a long-time member of the Washington County Fair Board, Washington County Farm Bureau, the Valley Farmer's Club, the Farm Council, the Junior Reading Club, The Civitan Club, the National Rifle Association, as well as many wildlife associations which supported his love and passion for the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.
Darrel is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Gary Conrad of Cincinnati, Ohio; his son and daughter-in-law, Kirk and Anna Schultheis of Parkersburg; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Schultheis of Marietta; and grandchildren, Alyson Schultheis of Cleveland, Kristin (Larry) Schultheis Sloter of Marietta, Lindsey (Brandon) Conrad Wheatley of Cincinnati, Jake Schultheis of Coronado, Calif., Jared Conrad of Cincinnati, Paige Schultheis of Parkersburg, Allie Schultheis of Parkersburg, as well as two great grandsons, Gabe and Reid Sloter.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Helen, he was preceded in death by his son, Ben F. Schultheis of Marietta in June 2013, as well as his brothers and sisters, Oma Bogard, Ruth Hill, Dayton Schultheis, Marjorie Hill, LaVada Bayless, Robert Schultheis, Norma Gale and Harold Schultheis.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, at the Newport United Methodist Church with Pastor Terry Schmelzenbach officiating. Burial to follow in Newport Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., today, at the Hadley Funeral Home Reno Chapel, 1021 Pike St., Marietta.
The family wishes to express its greatest appreciation to Darrel's beloved caregivers, Lucy Sandage and Ethel Harmon. They would also like to express their gratitude to the staff, doctors and nurses of Marietta Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care and counsel.
Memorials may be made to the Marietta First Church of the Nazarene, 100 Mill Creek Road, Marietta 45750, or to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box. 758517, Topeka, Kan., 66675.
