The Washington County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Washington County Public Library downstairs meeting room, 615 Fifth St., Marietta. Ernie Thode will lead the discussion on "Tell Us About Your Grandparents." Visitors are always welcome.
Benefit event Jan. 25 at Cutler Center
A benefit to raise money for Jim and Ruth Blair, who host the musicians at the Third Sunday Dinners, will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 25 at the Cutler Community Center, 4450 Two Mile Run Road. There will be a pot luck dinner, auction, raffles and singers. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish and/or dessert. Donation of items for the auction or raffles is appreciated. Proceeds will help the Blairs with medical expenses.

Winter dance benefit Jan. 26 at VFW post
A winter dance benefit will be held from 5 to 11 p.m. Jan. 26 at the VFW Post 5108 on Pike Street in Marietta. The cost is $7 per person or $12 per couple, with children 5 and under free. All proceeds will go towards end of life costs for Vietnam veteran Charles Worsham. There will be dancing, food and a silent auction with photos available. Donations are being accepted for the auction.

Business workshop Tuesday at WSCC
The Ohio Small Business Development Center at Marietta and the Belpre Area Chamber of Commerce offer free, two-hour "Basis of a Successful Start" workshops that will answer questions about how to start a business. The January workshop will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the library on the Washington State Community College campus. The workshops are free and open to the public, but registration is required. Registration is accepted until noon the day before the event by calling 373-5150 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Fred Rowe, master knife craftsman and proprietor of Bethel Ridge Forge near Bartlett, will give a presentation on knife-making emphasizing Damascus knife crafting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Cutler Community Center, 4550 Two Mile Run Road.
