RON JOHNSTON The Marietta Times
Marietta High senior Hailey Carman is planning to compete in rowing at the college level at the University of Charleston (W.Va.)
Sport: crew (rowing), cross country (3 years)
Rowing seat: stroke
College: University of Charleston (W. Va.)
Major: nursing anesthetist
Family: Brad and Stephanie Carman (father and mother); younger brother Hayden (freshman)
Question: How'd you happen to get involved with crew?
Answer: Actually, I got interested in middle school. In the eighth grade, my friend got me to go to rowing camp, and I tried it - and I absolutely fell in love with it.
I've been training eight months of the year every single year since my freshman year of high school - absolutely working hard as a I can to do well. And, I think I've made it pay off to this point.
Q: What are your rowing goals in your season season?
A: We only lost a couple of seniors last year. So, we have a lot of the same people in the same boats and we've been able to build on our achievements from last year. We can be better than we were, so hopefully we can go to nationals and do well at nationals. That's the goal.
Q: Name a couple of your career rowing highlights.
A: My sophomore year, we went to the nationals, and that was the best. Actually, we were better last year, but the competition was harder. We chose not to go, though.
In my freshman year, we went undefeated in the lightweight 4. Last year we were undefeated in the 8, and this year we're undefeated so far and hopefully it stays that way.
Q: You're going to Charleston to row also?
A: Yes, I'm very excited. I'm getting about a half-ride. It's better than nothing.
Q: Who has inspired you the most in the sport of rowing?
A: My coach (Joe Tewkesbury) has very much. He's a great guy. He's taught me just about everything under the sun about rowing.
My parents are very supportive. They're very involved and proud.
Q: When not rowing, what do you do?
A: Well, school..I'm a part-time PSEO and go to Washington State a half a day. So I do a lot of college work. I keep pretty busy.
I hang out with my friends, and that's about it. I'm always here (Harmar Rowing Club), about five hours a day.
