Late April and May usually is a great time to be a fan of the Marietta College baseball team. This year appears to be no different.
Two years ago, the Pioneers won the NCAA Division III World Series. Last year, the Pioneers were eliminated in the Regionals. But with a talented core of experienced players and capable younger players, hopes are high about a run through the NCAA tournament this spring.
The Pioneers took a major step Saturday by sweeping an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against John Carroll on Community Day. Meanwhile, OAC?leader Heidelberg split a doubleheader, leaving MC and the 'Berg in a tie for first.
We'll see how games go this week as the teams jockey for position. Home field advantage is crucial, especially for the Pioneers who do well on their home turf at Don Schaly Stadium in front of their hometown fans.
The excitement is building for fans as the stakes increase for the team. Marietta fans are accustomed to success through the Schaly years and right into the Brian Brewer era.
Players and coaches work hard all year from conditioning to winter training, to early spring games when players battled the cold and snow. Now, things are heating up and fans are on board, ready to follow MC into the post season.
As fans of the Marietta College Pioneers, we hope it's another long and successful run.
