The Marietta Amateur Radio Club will hold its annual Field Day exercise this Saturday and Sunday.
During the exercise the club will set up portable stations and communicate with other Ham Radio groups around the nation. Sponsored by the American Radio Relay League, the national organization of Amateur Radio operators, the event is designed to give operators an experience of operating under less than ideal conditions in a field situation. These stations operate on emergency power, use temporary antennas, and are required to set up and operate for a 24-hour period.
The public is welcome to visit Jackson Park in Marietta between 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday to observe the Field Day activity. Last year the group made contact with more than 1,400 other stations during the operation, and about a dozen local amateurs were involved.
In addition to the Marietta group, the Parkersburg Amateur Radio Club will be active in Fort Boreman Park in Parkersburg and Wood County Emergency Services will hold its Field Day at Rising Sun Ridge. A Field Day locator is available at arrl.org.
